I WOULD just like to thank all the staff and players at York RL for their efforts over the last two seasons.

These players played for nothing for weeks on end last year. They now want to play for York, they want to win for York.

I have stood on the terraces through some low times, I have forced myself to go out to watch York play and have come away thinking I must be barmy.

But now it's a high. I can't wait for the next game, the good, passionate, proud stuff, so you people who talk about coming back, I'd advise you to get up and try it, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Come to the next game this Sunday and see Garry Schofield and Bramley and give the York players the support they so deserve for their efforts.

Keep it up lads - we appreciate it.

In replyn to John Wherrett (Sports Mail, Monday). I am sure we won't ruin your grass at Bootham Crescent. Today's grass is better than it was 50 years ago. Ask Chelsea FC.

IT was with great disappointment and surprise that I read in your paper of the release of John Urwin.

Along with my eight-year-old son, I have watched many reserve and youth matches. He was clearly one of the best and most consistent players on the field.

He appeared astute for a 17-year-old, able to read a game well, tackled fairly, winning the ball every time. His distribution of the ball was better than some of his first-team colleagues.

In view of the recent first-team performance and the fact that the intermediates have defended well conceding few goals, I felt he had earned a place in the first team squad to gain experience.

Historically forwards have always gained the glory.

When the Evening Press has reported intermediate matches the defence have sometimes not received the deserved praise.

I feel saddened local boys are treated so badly - I am sure up-and-coming young players will think twice about joining York City.

If this young man remains in professional football, I wish him every success - he deserves to make it and I am sure he will.
