KEN Beavan is right to be indignant at City of York Council's extortionate charges for cookers (Readers Letters, April 7). Yet he should not let that mask an even more swingeing increase in fees - 25 per cent no less - for garages in the city centre.
Those who have been tenants since the garages were built (and are now pensioners) have truly paid for them and could surely qualify for a "long service bonus".
With the absence of public transport and loss of affordable food shops in the city centre it is the older generation who have to depend on cars for their shopping; again those who can least afford such a huge increase.
As this is the UN Year of the Older People, couldn't some consideration be given to those who are trying to remain independent and mobile? I shop for other pensioners as well as myself and provide lifts. Although the council wants cars out of the city centre, it is devious in making those living within the walls pay such a price for the lack of affordable food shops.
