A York woman has fulfilled her ambition and broken over a century of railway tradition by becoming the city's first female station master.
All aboard: Catherine Stimpson, who has been appointed the first-ever woman station manager at York Station. Picture by Richard Doughty
Catherine Stimpson, from Dunnington, had wanted to work on the railways since the age of seven.
When she first started with the old British Rail in 1995 it was as a welcome host helping passengers.
Catherine, 26, became station supervisor last year, and has now been appointed as GNER's customer service delivery manager at York Station - the modern equivalent of station master.
"People expect a bowler hat and they get Barbie," she joked.
"That's all part of the Fat Controller image we're trying to smash."
