It was a good night to be called Elizabeth. It was also a good night for North Yorkshire.
The 51st British Academy Awards honoured two portrayals of the Virgin Queen. York's own Dame Judi Dench added the BAFTA to her Oscar for her eight minute monarch in Shakespeare in Love. Cate Blanchett took the Best Actress award for the title role of Elizabeth - partly filmed in York Minster. The only disappointment was the lack of recognition for Little Voice. This charming tale, filmed in Scarborough, has become the bridesmaid of this season's movie awards ceremony. Many will have been disappointed that Michael Caine failed to win Best Actor.
Nevertheless, we should take pride that Hollywood and the British Academy have placed North Yorkshire in the spotlight.
