As a lifelong supporter of a free press, and of Manchester United, I am absolutely delighted at the news that Rupert Murdoch's BSkyB bid to buy United has been thrown out by the Department of Trade and Industry.

I do hope this is the beginning of the end of Murdoch's influence in the UK. His success to date, in unfairly disrupting rival newspapers by cut-throat pricing and in attempting to over-influence government of the UK, has only been matched by his phenomenal level of tax-avoidance on the profits, hundreds of millions of pounds, he makes from the Sun and Times and the Premier League contract.

His failure to take over United is a triumph for the future of independent football.
