The referee awarded compensation after being attacked because he abandoned a match says he has been beaten up again.

Tony Graham recovers after he was attacked in York

Tony Graham suffered cuts and swelling to his left cheek and eye in the incident outside his city centre flat on Wednesday night.

He claims his assailant is the same man who attacked him with a baseball bat after he called off the match almost five years ago.

Mr Graham says the man cut his face three times with a metal implement - possibly a key - and warned him: "Talk to the ***** Press again and you're **** dead!" But he said he would not be silenced.

The Evening Press reported last Saturday how the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board had awarded him £1,000 for injuries suffered when footballers, angry because he had halted a Sunday Afternoon League game which they were winning, later beat him up.

Mr Graham, who said he called the game off because of the condition of the pitch, revealed he was appealing for a higher pay-out.

This week's incident came as he was returning to his flat after posting a letter, he said.

"He must have been waiting at the side, and he approached me from behind.

"After he had cut me with a metal implement, I managed to turn round and land a punch on him and he ran off to a pick-up truck parked nearby and made off."

He said he went to hospital for treatment to the cuts, which bled for two hours.

"I still feel very sore. It feels really bad. What worries me is he knows where I live and I have wondered if I should move, but why should I?"

Police confirmed today that they had received an allegation of assault and were investigating.
