In response to your article 'Lab security criticised' (Evening Press, March 31), I can reassure readers that the Forensic Science Services (FSS) has already drawn up a strategy to ensure security in all areas and looks to exceed the requirements of our customers and those of the local community.
We commissioned a security review a year before the national Audit Office investigation and were implementing the recommendations when they visited us. When the arson attack at Wetherby - November, 1996 - was carried out by professional criminals, the lab already had tight security systems in place and these worked well to minimise the damage. Following the attack, the FSS took immediate action to increase lab security.
Following the second security review in 1996, we drew up our current strategy and have consulted with police and professional advisers. We have also asked the Home Office Internal Audit to review these arrangements periodically. The most recent audit was in November and was concluded satisfactorily.
