Scarborough's 1-0 win at Torquay means they have now collected ten points from their last five games.

That has given them a real chance of avoiding relegation to the Conference if they can repeat that form over the next six weeks.

Steve Brodie, operating in midfield, scored the only goal of the game twelve minutes from time with a blistering volley when a Wayne Bullimore corner was cleared direct to him on the edge of the penalty area.

The ball flew past Neville Southall in the Torquay goal, with the former Everton man deceived by the pace and dip on the ball.

For long periods, the affair was scrappy, but the game-plan devised by manager Colin Addison worked to perfection.

"We came and we scrapped, defended well from their set-plays and in all honesty, could have won by a bigger margin.

"We created the more clear-cut chances. The players are responding well and we must make sure that this is the start of another little run of results to get us into that pack of clubs just above us" said Addison.

Darren Roberts had two clear chances, both set up by his striking partner Chris Tate and really should have made more of them.

Early in the first half, Tate's sinuous run and cross left Roberts with only Southall to beat, which he did, but saw his scuffed shot trickle passed the post and away to safety.

In the final minute of the game, when Torquay had thrown their mountainous defenders into attack and caution to the win, Tate sent Roberts clear on goal, but the former Darlington man seemed mesmerised by the sheer presence of Southall and what was intended as a chip, became a low roller straight at the keeper.

The Torquay side looked more like a basketball team than a football team, with several players over six foot tall, but they created few clear chances on Tony Parkes' goal apart from the last ten minutes when there were several scrambles in the Scarborough goalmouth.
