SHED Seven are to play York Barbican Centre on June 4, as York's rock terriers return with a new single and greatest hits album.

Shed Seven lead singer Rick Witter who will play York's Barbican Centre on June 4

The Sheds have played at the Barbican only once before in their five-year chart career - on November 21 1996 - and this time will be supported by the winners of the Fibbers/Evening Press Battle of the Bands '99.

"We've been there, done it ourselves, supporting bands when we started, and on our first headline tour we had local bands supporting us in each town, so we wanted to do a similar thing again in York," said lead singer Rick Witter.

"We did Battle of the Bands twice and never won, so at first we thought about having the third placed band supporting us! But we changed our minds!"

Tickets will cost £10 but they are not yet on sale.

Meanwhile, Shed Seven's new single, Disco Down, will be released by Polydor on May 17, produced by Chris Sheldon, the man at the helm for the band's second album, A Maximum High.

The album, Going For Gold, The Best Of Shed Seven, will follow quickly on May 31, and will feature all the group's 13 singles since 1994, including re-worked versions of Speakeasy, Ocean Pie and a clubbed-up Dolphin, plus another new song, in the Chasing Rainbows vein, High Hopes. Dolphin is under consideration for summer single release, with High Hopes coming out later.
