PAUL WATSON, of Heworth, came third in two competitions, Clifton Cycling Club's open ten mile time trial and the Harrogate Nova CC open 19 mile hilly time trial, writes Keith Thompson.

The Clifton CC event on the A64-based Tadcaster to Copmanthorpe course was won by Barnsley international Wayne Randle (Pro Vision-Planet X) in 20min 28sec, with Hull's Adam Hardy (Leo RC) runner-up in 20-40.

Watson (Velo Club York-Sanyo) clocked 20-41, a personal best by one second, for third place. Tony Stott (Pete Read Racing) timed 20-46, Clifton Moor's Steve Gore-Browne (VC York) recorded 21.42 and Lilling's Nigel Thorpe (York Cycleworks) timed 21-56, a personal best.

Other times included - Knaresborough RT: Nigel Goscinski 22-19, Matthew Miller 23-27, Mac Adcock 24-06. VC York: Richard Weburn 21-28, Don Dale 23-42, Dave Longbottom 23-34. Clifton CC: Bob Noble 25-39. Knaresborough CC: Mike Youngson 22-35.

Pete Read Racing trio Stott, Newman and Joel Wainman won the team competition with an aggregate time of 1hr 2min 29sec.

Randle smashed the course record when winning the Harrogate Nova time trial based on Ripley and which included the mile-long ascent of Darley Head. His 45min 18sec sliced 44 seconds off the old record set by Leeds star Laurie Holmes (Morley CC).

Hull's Joel Wainman was runner-up in 45-31. Watson clocked 46-22.

Richard Benson (Knaresborough RT) was fastest junior. Harrogate's Denise Burton-Cole (Morley CC), daughter of the late Beryl Burton OBE, won the women's race.

Clifton CC times: Mark Wolstenholme (49-49), Matthew Lunn (53-14), Kevin Scully (56.53), Dave Byworth (59-42). Fulford's Matthew Miller (Knaresborough RT) timed 53-59.

Richard Sutcliffe, 15, the Yorkshire Schoolboy 10-mile champion, won the Under 16s Scratch race at the Argyle Financial Group Criteriums at Southport on his debut for Knaresborough RT. Later the same day he was runner-up in the 10-lap handicap race.
