A Candadian has appealed to the Lord Mayor of York for help in tracing his wife's long-lost relatives.

Ken Johnson, from Ontario, says his wife's relatives apparently originated in York and came to Canada in the mid 1850s, but left some relatives behind.

"Our ultimate goal would be to meet some of the descendants if they are still alive," he said. The family name is Sawdon. The Sawdon family we are researching includes two brothers William and Samuel who left England and settled in the County of York here in Ontario (from one York to another!).

"There is a strong possibility that they came from a place called Weaverthorpe, which is located to the south of Sawdon village."

The Lord Mayor, Councillor Derek Smallwood, has asked if any Evening Press readers can help Mr Johnson trace his wife's relatives. Anyone with information should contact Mike Laycock on York 653051, ext 345, or e-mail us at yorknewmedia@york.newsquest.co.uk
