Scarborough's new acting management duo of Derek Mountfield and Ray McHale had a disastrous start to their career when they saw their side crash to a humiliating defeat at Scunthorpe.
Mountfield substituted himself at half-time as he was suffering from a slight hamstring injury, but used the opportunity to bring on an additional striker in Ian Milbourne, as by that time his side was trailing by two goals.
Scunthorpe gave an object lesson in moving the ball forward quickly and with John Eyre and his wingbacks providing a non-stop supply of crosses into the Scarborough penalty area, the scoreline could have been greater.
Eyre was given a free reign down the right flank and for the first 20 minutes of the game he tormented Richard Jackson.
The first goal by Richard Logan came after 14 minutes, when Andrew Dawson's free kick was met by the big defender at the far post.
Alex Calvo-Garcia soon got his name on the scoresheet when he turned and shot low past Phil Naisbett from just inside the penalty area.
Naisbett later denied ex-York City forward Gary Bull with a good block, as Scunthorpe gave a hint of what was to come.
Scarborough had given a debut to 36-year-old Glyn Hodges in a striking role - which found him wanting - and he was taken off after only 25 minutes.
Mountfield re-organised his side at half-time, moving John Kay back into defence, as he went to four at the back in his search for goals.
Unfortunately, Kay did not play a captain's part when he appeared to make a gesture to the referee's assistant and was shown the red card within 10 minutes of the re-start.
Jason Lydiate held Jamie Forrester in the penalty are and referee Tony Bates had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Eyre flicked the ball into the corner of the net.
Naisbett was then beaten from the edge of the area by defender Chris Hope, who later hit the bar with a header.
Scarborough had their one moment of glory just a minute later, when Brodie broke at pace to give Chris Greenacre the chance to force the ball home from close range.
But within a minute, Calvo-Garcia had stroked home his second goal, again from the edge of the penalty area.
