A ROW between two brothers at Clifton Moor erupted into violence - and one of the pair was subsequently arrested after allegedly attacking a police officer with a 5ft-long piece of wood.

The officer used CS spray to subdue him.

The disturbance took place in the car park at Clifton Megabowl last night. York police were called out at 11.15pm after a man was seen smashing up a car.

The first policeman arrived eight minutes later to find the car was being violently kicked by a man, who had fallen out with its owner - the owner turned out to be his brother.

When an officer tried to intervene to defuse the family dispute the man allegedly turned his attention from the car to the policeman.

Using a 5ft-long piece of wood, which he picked up from the ground, he attacked the policeman.

The officer used CS spray to subdue his assailant.

When police reinforcements arrived a short time later the man was arrested for criminal damage and affray.

He was taken to Fulford Police Station where he is now helping police with their inquiries.

Sergeant Colin Ventress, of York police, said the policeman had not been injured in the attack but said it demonstrated the value of CS spray in dealing with such violent incidents.

"Fortunately the officer was not hurt in this attack, which could have been very nasty," he said.

"The CS spray has proved its value in helping the police to handle violent assailants - it protects police officers and members of the public as well as protecting the attackers from themselves."
