Calling those Wembley wonders.

Wembley line up: Andy McMillan, second from right, next to manager Alan Little, line up before their Wembley battle

The men of York City who triumphed on that dazzling day in May 1993 are to be re-united in the city, where their achievement installed them in club folklore.

The promotion play-off conquerors of Crewe have been invited as special guests of a sportsman's dinner for fellow Wembley ace Andy McMillan, currently marking his 12th season as a Minsterman.

The dinner in the Ebor Suite at York Racecourse on Thursday, May 20, will be the final social event in the testimonial year for McMillan, who holds the record for the second-highest number of appearances for his one and only club.

Said Graham Bradbury, chairman of the organising committee: "The intention is to round off Andy's year by getting together the Wembley team he played in. So we are trying to get contact everybody from that squad."

Of that 1993 squad only McMillan and Wayne Hall still remain with City, the rest since scattered through domestic and non-league football.

It's not thought there will be much difficulty in tracking down the 1993 squad, who will be brought together for the first time almost six years to the day of their Wembley wizardry.

But there is a mystery surrounding the whereabouts of that famous day's goal-scorer Gary Swann.

Little has been heard of the hub of the team since he left North Yorkshire rivals Scarborough to play in the Far East.

The dinner will be hosted by former top-notch referee Neil Midgley, while one of the speakers will be Fred Eyre, the self-confessed 'football's favourite failure'. Author and after-dinner speaker Eyre won the Daily Telegraph Tommy Cooper comedy award last year.

Talks are being held to secure the services of top comedy impersonator Kevin Connelly, a star turn at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award last month.

McMillan's committee have also organised a golf day in his benefit on Thursday, May 6.

Teams of four at £170 per team are invited to take part in the stableford competition to be played at The York Golf Club in Strensall to be followed by a dinner at York's Pavilion Hotel.

Tolson set to miss Oldham clash

Striker Neil Tolson may be forced out of Saturday's clash against his former club Oldham Athletic.

Shortly after scoring for York City reserves in their 2-1 Pontin's League Cup group win over Halifax Town last night Tolson tweaked a hamstring.

He came off immediately to undergo treatment. While he did not feel it was too much of a problem the striker thought it unlikely he would be fit for the visit by the Latics for whom he played in 1991-93.

But the Tolson setback was eased by the quartet of players seeking fitness after long-term injuries negotiating a full 90 minutes on a Bootham Crescent pitch made extremely heavy by recent downpours.

Midfielders Alan Pouton and Steve Agnew occupied central midfield, while player-coach Neil Thompson steadied a defence in which Graham Rennison was outstanding in the second-half as City protected their 2-1 lead given before half-time by goals from Tolson and Neil Woods.

In the dying minutes Pouton thrilled the small crowd when he launched himself on one of his characteristic swash-buckling swathes through the Shaymen's defence only to be halted by a crude tackle.

The remaining member of the foursome battling back from injury was goalkeeper Andy Warrington. Though his fractured hand caused some discomfort he admitted he had not had a lot to do.

Glimpses of neat footwork were shown down the right flank by on-trial winger David Williamson, while substitute Lee Bullock went close with a fine header late on. Admission to York City's FA Youth Cup fourth round replay against Ipswich Town at Bootham Crescent on Tuesday, February 2, will be £3 for adults and £1 for juniors and senior citizens. Season ticket-holders will have to pay.

The tie kicks off at 7pm and, if necessary, extra time and then penalties will determine the winners, who will then earn a fifth round home tie against either Walsall or West Ham.

Meanwhile, the Junior Reds' club night has been brought forward from Wednesday as a double-header combined with the replay.

The family room will be open from 6pm to 7pm for the Junior Reds' meeting when City players will be on duty.
