Black ice caused a spate of accidents on North Yorkshire's roads today - and weather forecasters predict there's more icy weather to come.

Police were called three accidents in the Bishopthorpe area.

There was a six-vehicle shunt outside the crematorium, a car left the road in the village and landed on its side in a field and a car also left the road outside Middlethorpe Hall and went into a ditch. No-one was injured in any of the incidents.

Officers were also called to three incidents in which drivers had slid off the road into trees, fields and lampposts in York, including some on Tadcaster Road.

Four vehicles slid off the road into a ditch on the Appleton Roebuck to Acaster Malbis road, and a farmer offered to pull the vehicles out with his tractor.

There were also a number of minor shunts when cars slid into the back of other vehicles while in queues of traffic - three near the McArthurGlen designer shopping outlet.

Ambulance crews were sent to accidents on the A19 and A59 involving minor shunts between vehicles, but none of the motorists was said to be injured.

A police spokesman said none of the accidents had been serious, but he urged all motorists to take extra care and watch their speed.

Meanwhile, weather forecasters today warned people to expect more frost and ice right up to next weekand said temperatures could drop as low as -6 degrees over the weekend.
