Three people - including a police officer allegedly struck by a car and a hammer attack victim - are today recovering at home after violence erupted near Selby.

Police said that four men had been arrested in connection with a series of disturbances late on Sunday night in Snaith, and had been bailed pending further inquiries.

In the first incident, a 43-year-old woman was said to have been hit with a glass in the Bell and Crown pub. She was taken to Pontefract General Infirmary where she was treated for a cut to her arm.

In a separate incident in the nearby market place, a 25-year-old man was allegedly assaulted by another man wielding a hammer.

He was taken to hospital and discharged after treatment for a broken hand and a cut to the head.

When police arrived at the incident, a further fight spilled over into the street, and a car was allegedly driven at a male police officer.

The officer suffered back injuries and shock, and is now recovering at home after hospital treatment.

A police spokesman described it as a very volatile situation.

Four males aged 16, 24, 25 and 34 have been questioned by police at Goole, and released on bail pending further inquiries. No one has yet been charged.

Miss Kaye Horton, licensee of the Bell and Crown, said: "It was a quiet night apart from the incident.

"Punters shouldn't be put off. Snaith is still a lovely place to come for a drink."

Police are appealing for witnesses to any of the incidents, and can be contacted on 01405 721013.
