RARING to go York Wasps are on full alert for a Shark attack.
Dean Robinson's new look side take on Hull Sharks of the Super League tomorrow in the York team's only pre-season friendly.
And after last weekend's friendly against Hunslet was called off because Wasps were ravaged by illness and injury, Robinson has revealed all of his squad will play a part at the Boulevard in what promises to be a bruising encounter.
Steve Hill, John Strange, Andy Precious and Craig Booth have recovered from a bout of 'flu, while Mark Cain and Mick Crane have shaken off heavy colds. Lea Tichener and Paul Darley have also recovered from troublesome groin and back strains.
They will all feature in a squad bolstered by the additions this week of goal-kicking utility back Jamie Benn, Australian forward Matt Lambert and fellow forward Chris Judge.
The trio join fellow pre-season signings New Zealander Peter Edwards, former York Acorn ace Darren Callaghan and scrum-half Crane.
"All 20 signed-on players will take part, there won't be anybody missing out because it is likely to be our only friendly prior to the Challenge Cup," said Robinson. "I am delighted everybody is fit and well and I have had good reports from the physio as regards the fitness of the players."
Robinson, while revealing he was hoping to announce another new signing within the next couple of days, declared himself more than satisfied with the squad he has assembled. "We obviously needed to bring in some players and strengthen the squad having kept the nucleus of the team from last year," said the Wasps' coach.
"We are now heading into a more difficult league and we needed to supplement the squad with some quality players."
Robinson maintains his team will enter the Boulevard and go head-to-head with the might of the Super League undaunted. "It will be a difficult game but at this stage of the season the intensity that comes with weekly games in the Super League will not be there and so we will be going to give a good account of ourselves," he said.
"It is all about getting some much needed match practice in prior to the 31st and the start of the Challenge Cup. The amateur clubs are now well into their season and it is that difference that can catch you out."
Hull have embarked on a rebuilding programme of their own during the close season.
The club have made seven new signings - Steve Barrow and Steve Holgate from Wigan, Karl Harrison from Halifax, Andrew Purcell from Illawara, Rob Roberts from Hunslet and Matt Calland from Bradford - and completed the signing of former Castleford Tigers forward Michael Smith this week.
But four of the magnificent seven will not feature tomorrow. Holgate, Harrison and Calland are out through illness and injury while Kiwi Smith is being given more time to acclimatise by coach Peter Walsh having only flown into the country on Thursday.Steve Prescott, Sharks' player of the year last season, is also unavailable after damaging his shoulder in an international match for Ireland.
The game will also see Hull prop Steve Craven and assistant coach Steve Crooks going head-to-head with their former York colleagues, while Wasps' Leigh Deakin and Paul Darley will be returning to their old stamping ground.
