Yorkshire fast bowler Gavin Hamilton may today find himself in England's World Cup squad - and also in Scotland's!

And the possibility of such a bizarre situation arising has caused Scotland's director of cricket, Jim Love, the former Yorkshire batsman, to seek clarification of Hamilton's position from the International Cricket Council.

At their meeting in New Zealand last week, the ICC agreed to a rule change which would allow players born in an Associate

Member country to represent that country without affecting their chances of a Test career with a Full Member country.

This cleared the way for Scottish-born Hamilton to play in the World Cup for Scotland and still go on and enjoy a Test career with England if good enough to be selected.

But now a fresh complication has arisen because England cricket chairman David Graveney is understood to want Hamilton in his initial squad of 30 which will later be pruned to a final 15.

Love also wants to name Hamilton in his squad and, furthermore, can guarantee him a place in the final 15. "I have asked the ICC if they can say whether or not I can select Gavin," said Love. "I have spoken to Gavin in Australia and he doesn't know what to do."
