York magistrates have ordered a bus driver off the road for 12 months - leaving him facing a wrecked career and the loss of his job.
A routine documents' check by police proved the downfall of father-of-three Gary Brian Milligan, magistrates heard.
When officers stopped his car in Hamilton Drive, Holgate, at 3.50pm on December 3, they realised he had been drinking, said prosecutor Jane Evans.
A breath test showed he had 57 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.
Milligan, aged 42, of Foxwood Lane, Acomb, pleaded guilty to drink-driving at York Magistrates Court.
He was fined £120 with £50 costs and banned for 12 months.
Milligan, who was unrepresented, apologised to the magistrates and police for causing them inconvenience.
He said his employers had told him losing his licence would mean losing his job and he would be unable to drive buses for six years for insurance reasons.
Magistrates took into account his guilty plea and the loss of his job.
