For the last ten years he has been our Henry. Henry Wharton is York's biggest sporting hero, and his decision to quit will sadden many today.
Typically his exit is a dignified one. He has chosen to go now because his heart is no longer in it. To carry on would be cheating his loyal legion of fans, he says, and he is not willing to do that.
Wharton has been an ambassador for York in and out of the ring. Unlike another famous Yorkshire fighter, Prince Naseem, his sportsmanship has always matched his skill. We wish 'our Henry' luck in his retirement.
