THE arrest of 33 people for urinating in the street recently has highlighted the lack of public conveniences in the city.
Such facilities not only reduce the likelihood of such conduct occurring but are also an important facility for residents and visitors.
If I visit a city, I judge it not only on its sites, but also on its facilities. I find it hard to believe that York's many visitors judge our city on other criteria.
It is regrettable that our council can find funds to publish its propaganda newspaper The York Citizen but no funds to provide for a basic human needs.
Indeed the trend recently has been for it to close such public lavatories that remain (for example those at Monkgate).
Such a policy not only reduces the quality of life for York's citizens but damages York's important tourist industry.
