Scarborough's former York City striker Neil Campbell's move to Colchester has fallen through.

Campbell failed to agree personal terms after the clubs had agreed a £15,000 fee, meaning City miss out on £3,000 from a sell-on clause.

His decision to turn down the move has astounded Boro chairman John Russell who said: "I can't understand players today. I am amazed. He doesn't want to go to play second division football with an extra 12 months on his contract."

Campbell, whose contract with the Seasiders expires at the end of the season, will be in contention for a place on the bench for Boro's trip to Southend tomorrow.

It is their first match since manager Mick Wadsworth held clear-the-air talks with the players and all eyes will be on how they respond.

They will be looking for revenge against a Southend side which kicked off their campaign with a 2-1 win at the McCain Stadium on the opening day of the season.

Former Everton and Aston Villa centre back Derek Mountfield makes his Boro debut in the division three clash after his expected first appearance was scuppered when the Auto Windscreens Shield clash with Wigan was postponed in midweek.

The 36-year-old, who played under Wadsworth at Carlisle, will partner French centreback Alex Marinkov who returns to the side after illness and injury, as does skipper John Kay who has been out with an Achilles injury.

But they will be missing player-coach Jamie Hoyland, centre-back Jason Lydiate and youngster Shaun Rennison through suspension.

It could be the final appearance in Boro colours for goalkeeper Luke Weaver whose loan agreement from Sunderland ends after the game on Saturday, as does the loan stay of Manchester City striker Chris Greenacre.

But with Danish striker Thomas Dablesteen, who was playing for Boro on a non-contract basis, having left the club, Wadsworth may try to secure the services of Greenacre until the end of the season.

Boro: from Weaver, Kay, Marinkov, Mountfield, McNaughton, Atkinson, Jackson, Radigan, Bullimore, Brodie, Greenacre, Rainford, Campbell, Russell, Robinson.
