Call it a Day, runner-up to Him Of Priase in last year's Anthony Mildmay, Peter Cazelet Memorial Handicap Chase, is napped to go one better in tomorrow's showcase race at Sandown.
The Esher course, where Channel 4 cameras will cover the action, provides the main racing of the day. Tomorrow's Haydock programme was called off today because the course is waterlogged.
Gruelling conditions will not inconvenience Call It A Day, who will have plenty of supporters in this £30,000 centrepiece event. The David Nicholson-trained gelding won the Whitbread Gold Cup over this course and distance in the spring, beating Fine Thyne by five lengths.
Although yet to strike top form this season, Call It A Day ran well enough at Cheltenham last month when fourth to Tamarindo over a barely adequate trip to command plenty of respect here.
He has an extra half mile to travel tomorrow and, with Adrian Maguire in the saddle, is tipped to make up for last year's narrow defeat in the corresponding race.
In the £25,000 Sun 'King Of Punters' Tolworth Hurdle, which is Sandown's other feature race, Hidebound will be a very popular choice to extend his unbeaten sequence.
Hidebound, trained by the in-form Nicky Henderson. was successful in his only start last season and has looked a class act this term, beating high-class rivals in style at Newbury and Ascot.
A very exciting prospect, Hidebound will doubtless start at cramped odds tomorrow as he bids to complete a seasonal hat-trick. Mick FitzGerald has the mount.
Kurakka has rock-solid claims in the Sun Punters' Club Hotline Novices' Chase.
Josh Gifford's six-year-old got off the mark for the season at Towcester and followed-up in sensation style at Ascot three weeks ago when producing a copy-book display of jumping to beat Strong Paladin by 13 lengths.
The best could be yet to come from Kurakka, who can complete a hat-trick tomorrow under Richard Dunwoody.
The Bill Rees Novices' Handicap Hurdle offers Dunwoody another chance of victory aboard Upham Lord, trained by Philip Hobbs.
The six-year-old has finished in the frame in all his three starts this season and can be excused his latest below-par effort at Newbury, where he failed to stay the extended three miles trip. Tomorrow's shorter distance should suit him better.
The anticipated appearance of Unsinkable Boxer in the Bosworth Novices' Chase at Warwick tomorrow has, alas, not materialised and the absence of Martin Pipe's exciting prospect leaves the way open for Samuel Wilderspin.
David Nicholson's gelding showed useful form over hurdles last season and has always looked the type to prove even better over the major obstacles.
Also worthy of interest is the in-form Nessun Doro in the Sherbourne Handicap Hurdle. Stan Mellor's charge is a previous course and distance winner.
