It is ironic that Diana, Princess of Wales, has been granted royal privileges in death that she was denied in life. Her image has already adorned British stamps. Now it is on a £5 commemorative coin, with the Queen on the flip side.
The coin will cost £9.95, £32.50 or £595, depending on whether you buy the standard, silver or gold versions. Wealthy coin collectors are expected to splash out on the more expensive editions.
It must be hoped that emotionally vulnerable people who can ill afford this costly memorial will not feel compelled to buy one. The standard Diana coin in its presentation wallet is a more affordable and equally lasting memorial to the Princess.
