Harrogate's dismal run of eight games without a win continued unabated in Jewson's National League One at Newbury who rubbed salt into Gate's wounds by inflicting the third home and away double in a row on Harrogate side.

Newbury went on the rampage with the left winger Jeremy Griffiths touching down four tries, full-back Tom Holloway crossing for three and right winger Tyrone Howe also scoring. Fly half Justin Poihippi added two conversions.

Three penalties by Matthew Yates saw Harrogate trailing 17-9 at half-time, Yates going on to convert a try by Dave Wheat.

Meanwhile Wharfedale, after a shaky start, went from strength to strength and now need just one more win to enjoy a 50-50 playing record.

They plundered 59 points to nil off their Jewson's opponents with Wharfedale's skipper Charles Vyvyan, a regular tower of strength, scoring one of their nine tries and David Pears striking seven conversions.

Otley also failed to reply to Henley's try through their lock forward Jerry Sampson, two other scoring attempts failing because of technical infringements. Henley, who controlled the second half, won 5-0.

Former Whitby and Middlesbrough half back Grant Lenton kicked Scarborough through to the sixth round of the Tetley's Bitter Vase with his fourth penalty goal two minutes from the end of two ten minute periods of extra time.

They and home side Heath had been drawing 9-9 at full-time after Colin Hewitson had scored a hat-trick of penalty goals for Heath.

A Malton and Norton XV beat Scarborough Vikings 28-10 with tries through No 8 Dave Knaggs, centre Dave Watson, hooker Carl Rushworth and winger Rob Lakin, David Webster converting all four.

Andy Holloway and Oliver Stewart scored tries for the Vikings.

Ripon beat their visitors Northallerton 17-16 after North had pulled back from being 17-5 down at half-time. No 8 Phil Staines and lock Andy Fell scored the home side's tries, Richard Moss goaling both and adding a penalty.

Winger Karl Elliott scored a brace of tries for North and Mick Robson kicked two penalties.

A Whitby XV beat their visitors Redcar 22-5, skipper Andy Dudman (2) and Oliver Roberts scoring Whitby's tries, Dave Pike scoring both conversions and a penalty.

Redcar, who trailed 15-0 at half-time, replied with a try by hooker Martin Challenor.

Richmondshire beat Barnard Castle 20-5 with tries through Nick Hunter and Steve Goodchild, Graeme Newton adding a conversion and three penalties. Lock Andy Page scored Castle's try.

Wetherby beat their vistors Aireborough 19-12 with tries by Phil Hill, John Greenwood and Colin Logan, Simon Martin accounting for two conversions.

James Williams scored all Airborough's points with a goal and an unconverted try.

Driffield triumphed 17-10 over their fifth round NPI Cup tie visitors Northern, who are senior ranked in North One.

A penalty try converted by James Iveson gave Driffield a 7-3 interval lead, Dan Walker replying with a drop goal.

Scrum half Patrick Burdass touched down a pushover try, Iveson converting and adding a late penalty after winger Richard Francis had scored a try for Northern.

Pocklington's friendly at Thornensians was called off because the home side couldn't raise a team.
