A YORK man was today appearing before city magistrates charged with a string of driving offences after "horrified" police discovered a toddler in a car they had been pursuing at high-speed through the city centre.
Officers found the two-year-old child unrestrained in the Vauxhall Astra, which struck a pedestrian in Goodramgate yesterday, sparking the chase which ended in Acomb when the driver jumped from the moving Astra before it crashed into a parked car.
The 27-year-old man is charged with dangerous driving, drink-driving, driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, failing to give police correct personal details, and carrying a child without a seat belt or child seat. Police have released a 22-year-old York woman arrested during the incident.
