In response to M Robinson's letter (Friday, November 20), 'RAF slights war dead' let me assure the writer that no such slight was given by the Royal Air Force and especially Royal Air Force Linton-on-Ouse.
In full accordance with Ministry of Defence directives the following action was taken; no aircraft take-offs or engine start-ups were completed between 1050hrs and 1110hrs and airborne aircraft remained above 5,000ft. Furthermore, a local press release was given to adjoining Royal Air Force Linton-on-Ouse parish councils informing them of the activation of the station warning siren to indicate the silence observance at 1100hrs and 1102hrs for completion.
As to the criticism that we 'continued their droning and diving' we, like the United Kingdom as a whole, followed our daily activities both prior to and after the observation. More appropriately Royal Air Force Linton-on-Ouse has provided uniformed representation at some 12 Remembrance Memorial Services on Sunday, November 8, 1998, this included York, Ripon and Harrogate along with representation at local village ceremonies.
The 11th-hour observation was fully made by all Royal Air Force personnel and attached civilians at Royal Air Force Linton-on-Ouse, while training pilots and navigators was conducted throughout the remainder of the day and fully endorsed by the Ministry of Defence.
