Further to the article in the Evening Press about financing of the York Archaeological Trust (December 2), I would like to draw attention to a serious error.
The York Archaeological Trust funds a programme of academic work which is financed primarily from the surplus generated by the popular Jorvik Viking Centre.
The cost of the planned academic work for the year to March 2002 is currently estimated to be around £1 million. The trust is concerned that the Jorvik Viking Centre may not be able to generate the adequate surplus to cover all of these costs.
It is not true that the Jorvik Viking Centre will have debts of £1 million at this time as was suggested by both the article and accompanying bills on boards around the city of York.
