WHILE this newspaper has given its full support to the campaign to light up York for Christmas, we must express reservations about the Clifford's Tower light show.
Earlier this year the picture of Anne Frank was beamed onto the tower. It was a poignant and moving sight, particularly as the castle was the scene of one of York's blackest moments: the massacre of Jewish families in the 12th century.
To now turn Clifford's Tower into a giant Christmas decoration seems inappropriate.
As the concern about the Coppergate Phase II development has shown, the people of York are very protective of the tower. The place for the baubles and glitter of the festive season is across the shopping streets, not on one of our most ancient monuments.
