Lee girls ready for nationals

CANON LEE girls will compete in the final of the English Schools' Cup at Redditch, Worcestershire, with a massive task.

Having disposed of many of the North East's leading running schools at the regional competition at Allertonshire School, Northallerton, they will now be up against the top national teams from an original entry of 400 schools.

The Canon Lee team is: Asha Hibbert, Kerry Waterworth, Louise Bonney, Becky Bones, Holly Atkinson, and Lois Telfer.

Next Tuesday about 500 athletes will be competing in the York and District Schools' Team Championships on Knavesmire. These will also be trials for the area team.

The boys will run in the morning and the junior race should see an exciting battle between Tadcaster's Joel Riley and Sherburn's David MacQuarrie, who is a year younger but has been in outstanding form in club races.

The afternoon starts with the Intermediate Girls' race at 1.30pm, which should provide no problems for Charlotte Bleasdale nor for the Tadcaster team.

The Year 7 race usually leads to the discovery of new talent. Good early season form has been shown by Lisa Collett (Tadcaster) in club races and Holly Atkinson (Canon Lee) and Hannah Cameron (Manor) in school events.

The final race, the Junior Girls, should be the best of the day. The established Year 9 runners Nina Griffith (Millthorpe), Aimee Collett and Jenna Davies (both Tadcaster) will be challenged by Canon Lee's English Schools' cup team - Asha Hibbert, Kerry Waterworth and Louise Bonnie (all Year 8) and St Peter's Lara Gibbs and Anna Clarke.

To add to these are Carey Greaves (Barlby) 46th in last year's English Schools' championships, but who has no race form this season, and Selby High School athlete Amy Fozzard, Britain's leading athlete for her age in the Pentathlon last summer and a strong distance runner.
