York has many varied interesting shops. It also has many empty shops and it is also ringed around at every point of the compass by large shopping complexes.
What York does not have is a place where weary shoppers can rest before setting off home.
Parliament Street is bleak, barren and usually full of 'entertainment.' King's Square, with its shady trees, has greasy pavements which resound to the noise of fire-eaters and jugglers etc.
There is no need to build round Clifford's Tower. I plead with the council for grass, trees, seats and a space of peace and calm where we can rest, watch the ducks on the water and soak up the atmosphere of the wonderful historical buildings all around this area. Once lost, this space will be gone for ever.
