RUGBY LEAGUE
Young rugby league stars of the future from around the North East put their talents on display when York hosted its first ever District Schools Rugby League Development Rally.
A representative side and a development side from York took on teams from Gateshead, Scarborough, Dewsbury and Bradford at New Earswick's White Rose Avenue ground.
York's first team won three games and lost two, with tries coming from David Richmond (Bishopthorpe, 3), Tom Hodgson (St Aelreds, 3), Zak Robinson (Our Lady's) and Adam Johnson (Osbaldwick).
The 'B' team but up a sterling effort but were beaten in all five games, Daniel Banner (Lakeside) and Jack Hunt (Clifton Without) scoring their two tries.
Scarborough won two and lost three while the stars of the show were Dewsbury who won all five of their matches.
York: Liam Gargan, Tom Hodgson, Joe Hemmings (all St Aelreds), Adam Johnson (Osbaldwick), Chris Corr (Hob Moor), Ross Divorty (Badger Hill), Darryl Fogg (New Earswick), Zak Robinson (Our Lady's), David Richmond (Bishopthorpe), Ben Potter (Knavesmire), Tom Ocking (Knavesmire).
York 'B': Jason Lofthouse (Upper Poppleton), Jack Hunt (Clifton Without), Paul Robinson, Matthew Revell, Joe Smith (all Our Lady's), Dan Rupee (Bishopthorpe), Adam Bruce (Huntington), James Cooper (Knavesmire), James Goodwin (Dunnington), Daniel Banner (Lakeside).
Four York boys played a key role in North and East Yorkshire Schools rugby league team's 18-16 win over Wakefield and District.
Nic Caldwell and Paul Payne (All Saints) and Matthew Corr and Johnny Waldron (Oaklands) did well enough to be included in the squad for the next regional game against Leeds and Bradford at Hull on Wednesday, December 9.
The York and District Schools' game against Sheffield has been switched from Saturday to Heworth tonight (7pm).
RUGBY UNION
Six pupils of St Peter's School, York, are making their mark in rugby union, having been selected for Yorkshire.
Fly-half Alistair Robertson and second row forward Andrew Springgay are in the under-18 squad while centre threequarter Richard Pike, second row forward Thomas Abel, prop forward Daniel Wright and Scottish schoolboy international scrum-half Alex Drysdale are with the county under-16s.
Springgay scored a try in Yorkshire Under 18s' 59-0 win over Cheshire recently and was included in the team facing Durham at Durham City RUFC today. Robertson was on the bench alongside Andrew Wilson (Pocklington).
Yorkshire under-16s scored an 11-3 win against Winchester and Pike has been included in the team to play Durham at Stockton on Sunday.
FOOTBALL
All three York Boys teams lost on Saturday.
The U13s went down 3-1 to Sheffield, Jason Roughley scoring for York, while the U14s were beaten 9-2 by Hull, who also beat York 1-0 at U15 level.
The U11 and U13 league matches due to be played at home to Bradford this coming Saturday, November 28, have been postponed. That's a double blow for the U11 side whose home game against Sheffield last week was called off as Sheffield do not have an U11 team at present.
North Yorkshire Schools' U16s play Cumbria at Carlisle on Saturday.
North Yorkshire: Adam Russell (Scalby), Ashley Lyth, Mark Swales (both Whitby CC) Jonathan Moore, Paul Young, Aidan Ross, Lee Wadsworth, James Gibson (all J Rowntree), Michael Walker (Fulford), Ben Rhodes (Lowfield), Jonathan Ross (Huntington), Simon Collins (Canon Lee), James Pepper (Northallerton Coll), Chris MacFarlene, Anthony Gosling (both Stokesley), Lee Brogan (Easingwold) Alex Middleton (Rossett High), Matthew Smith (St Aidan's), Shaun Unworth (King James), Liam Ferguson, Steven Kenny, Simon Clemerson (all St John Fisher)
