Sue Roper's letter (November 20) absolutely infuriated me. Her suggestion that shops be built on the outskirts of York, at places such as Monks Cross and Naburn Shopping Village, instead of the centre of York, is a call to hammer the final nail into the coffin that is retail trade in the city centre.

The likes of Ms Roper would have York continue to be transformed into a retail wasteland with a tourist theme park built in its stead.

When I first moved to York I was appalled that there was no general supermarket within the city walls, other than the branch of the rather specialist Marks & Spencer. Similarly, the department stores are tiny for a city of this population.

If York is to prosper, its mercantile base needs to grow. Such development need not conflict with preserving the history of this city. It would complement York.
