If only one in five people bother to vote in some North Yorkshire local elections (Evening Press, November 14), then look no further than the scandalously archaic first past the post system which uses an 'X' for the illiterate to put their mark for selecting a candidate.

If four voters out of five don't vote then they are saying, my vote is meaningless so why waste my time?

We need a system of proportional representation to make all votes count.

If the system cannot be changed then voters can vote tactically to make first past the post redundant.
