Canon Lee stride towards place in national finals

CROSS COUNTRY

Canon Lee School girls achieved a great victory in the North East round of the English Schools Cross-Country Cup at Northallerton.

The opposition included many well known cross-country schools from Newcastle, Durham and Cleveland, including the schools that finished second and fifth in last year's National final.

Canon Lee now go on to this year's national final at Redditch on December 5.

Well judged runs by their leading athletes saw Canon Lee well clear, with Asha Hibbert third, Kerry Waterworth fifth, and Louise Bonnie sixth in the field of 70.

The performance of the fourth scorer is vital in these team events and Canon Lee's inexperienced Year 7 runner, Holly Atkinson, showed great potential and tactical sense in moving through the field to finish 21st - making Canon Lee the first team to have four scorers.

The team was completed by Becky Bones 41st and Lois Telfer 58th.

Tadcaster's junior team ran well to finish fifth in the high standard event, the team being led home by Hannah Dunsire in 11th place.

Their Intermediate team was hit by the unavailability of one of their leading runners. Their remaining four ran with great determination to try to overcome the disadvantage, but finished eight points behind the qualifying positions.

Tadcaster placings: Juniors - Hannah Dunsire 11th, Charlotte Brady 30th, Liz Norriss 35th, Jo Bishop 36th, Helena Carter 37th, Emma Reeve 47th - 70 ran.Inters - Charlotte Bleasdale sixth, Aimee Collett ninth, Jenna Davies 12th, Adele Wright 41st - 55 ran.

FOOTBALL

Hambleton/Richmond U15 soccer team has now reached the fourth round of the Heinz Ketchup/ESFA competition, having beaten Wakefield 4-2, Doncaster 2-0 and West Tyne 2-0.

It is the furthest that Hambleton have gone in the competition. Four boys from Easingwold School are in the squad - Simon Gripton, Andrew Bannerman, James Pringle and Richard Wilsdon.

The first round of the Yappers Cup (Indoor U12 5-a-side competition) will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 1 and 2.

First named team chooses ends, second named team kicks off. North East Group games are a single session of eight minutes. All other games are five minutes each way.

Leagues are decided on points, goal difference and goals scored format. Where teams finish level there will be a "Golden Goal/ Sudden Death" extra time of three minutes each way. If this is goalless the matches will be decided by a penalty shoot out.

RUGBY UNION

ST PETER'S SCHOOL, York, have been drawn to play at home to Ripley St Thomas of Lancaster in the Northern Division of the Daily Mail Rugby Union Schools' Under-15 competition.

Pocklington have been drawn away to Kettlethorpe. There are 32 Yorkshire schools in the first round. St Peter's reached the semi-finals last year. In the Under-18 competition St Peter's have reached the fifth round.

Hat-trick for Boroughbridge

BOROUGHBRIDGE High School are celebrating a hat-trick of national successes.

Georgina Winton, 12, has been selected to play for England at badminton in the European Junior Championships.

Fifteen-year-old Katy Virr has been chosen to play for England at volleyball and will be joined by Emma Metcalfe, 16, who has been called up to train with the junior squad.

All three pupils are from the Ripon area.

NETBALL

YORK'S Huntington School Under-14s' netball team has triumphed again.

Hot on the heels of winning the York and District rally, the team emerged victorious in the North Yorkshire county round of the national school's tournament at Rossett School, in Harrogate.

The teenagers now go forward to represent the county in the Yorkshire and Humberside regional round of the competition.

In the battle for the county crown, Huntington made an impressive start by beating Harrogate's Ashville College 7-3, Stokesley School 6-3 and Whitby's Caedmon School 10-5.

The next match, against Thirsk School, proved a closely fought affair and ended in a 5-5 draw.

The York youngsters got back to winning ways with a 10-6 victory over Scarborough's Pindar School before being held 6-6 by Harrogate's St Aidan's CE High School.

The last match of the day was against city rivals All Saints' RC School, with Huntington knowing another victory would give them the county title.Playing to a very high standard, Huntington ran out convincing winners 12-6.

North Yorkshire's Under-16 team got off to a winning start under their new coach at Derby.

The U16s, now trained by former Tadcaster pupil and North England player Karen Hill, defeated Herefordshire 36-13 in their opening match and Derbyshire 24-15 in their second.

Kirsty Saint and Gemma Shaw picked up the player of the match awards.

The U14s county team, who also had a new coach in the form of former All Saints pupil and county player Emma Humbles, had a mixed start to their campaign.

They won 30-10 against Herefordshire in their first game but were then beaten 25-20 by an U-15s Leicestershire team and 19-7 by Derbyshire.

Players of the match were Christie Barnard, Claire Gillick and Karen Airey.

HOCKEY

RISING hockey stars at York's biggest secondary school have earned county recognition at the double.

Huntington School pupil Hannah Rockliff has been selected for North Yorkshire Under-19s amid fierce competition - despite being aged only 16.

Midfielder Rockliff has already played for a number of years in the Under-16 team, as well as playing netball for York and district.

Joining her in the county ranks is 15-year-old Jo Grummitt, who has been selected for North Yorkshire's Under-16s.

Like her school pal, midfielder Grummitt is a keen netball player and has also played netball for York and district.

Another teenager who has won county honours is 13-year-old Elizabeth Owen, of Pocklington School.

She has been selected for the Humberside Under-13 team after trials involving 45 players at Winterton.

Although she normally plays centre half, Owen turned out at right back for Humberside when they beat Lincolnshire 1-0 on Sunday.

FENCING

THREE young fencers from the Mount School, York, have been making a big impression in various competitions.

Clare Holloway, 16, came second in the Under-17 UK Championships in London, and went on to represent Great Britain in an international Under-17 epee competition in Heidenheim, Germany. She is now preparing to compete in Dijon, France, next month in an international Under-21 'A' grade event.

Her sister, Helen Holloway, 11, and fellow pupil Emma Cole, 12, performed impressively in the Yorkshire and Humberside Championships in Harrogate.

Emma won silver in the Under-14 epee while Helen took the bronze medal in both the Under-14 foil and epee.

Both girls have qualified for the Nationals in January, delighting coach Brian Matless with their progress.
