Soon North Yorkshire could boast 'The Village With No Name'. County council officials say that there is no money to replace village name signs.
Travellers will be unable to tell if they are in Grewelthorpe or Glaisdale, Kepwick or Kettlesing. And if only some of the letters erode, we might be left with just the 'ping' from Leppington or the 'ugg' from Duggleby.
We know the council is short of cash. But this is a cutback too far.
Every parish council should be reassured that its village's signs will be replaced as necessary. And we will allow the official who decreed otherwise to remain nameless.
