So Roy Templeman, chief officer of the city planning department, thinks that it is 'dithering' to give long and serious consideration to the plans for the Foss-side Coppergate extension (Evening Press, November 11).

Would that more 'dithering' had prevented the building of Stonebow and other eyesores great and small which have been foisted on York and its citizens over the last 30 or so years.

By all means do something about Piccadilly where a start has already been made in housing with more to follow. It is this continued, steady increase in homes in the city centre which will help to prevent its decline, rather than the introduction of more department stores, shops and offices.

There must be a limit to the amount of spending residents and visitors can do in York and to judge by the numbers of empty shops that limit has just about been reached.
