YORK Acorn Running Club's Darrell Moore recorded a season's best time of just over 33 minutes to win the men's 10km road race at RAF Menwith Hill.

Club member Catriona Sowden claimed third place in the women's race, which was won by Tadcaster Harriers' Joanne Ward.

Steve Baker, of Easingwold-based South Hambleton Running Club, claimed third place in the 30-mile off-road Kilburn Kanter, near York, in a time of 4 hrs 59 min.

Baker was just two minutes behind Malcolm Coles in second place and 14 minutes behind winner Ian Hill.

Gerry Orchard, of York Acorn Running Club, finished in a time of 5 hrs 6 min.

Orchard came sixth in the Long Score competition at the two-day Karrimor international mountain marathon centred on Cumbria's Howgill Fells.

The event includes a compulsory overnight camp, so competitors have to carry a tent, cooking gear and supplies. Competitors also have to pass through checkpoints.

Atrocious weather, including strong winds on the first day, forced 82 competitors in the Long Score section of the multi-competition event to retire.

There were 232 finishers in the Long Score event. Orchard scored 596 points and finished in 11 hours 52 minutes. Acorn president Robert Hall finished 121st, timing 11hr 23min (350pts). Acorn club secretary Nick Ford was 177th (290pts), taking just over 11 hours.

York Acorn men's cross-country team competed at Hartlepool last weekend over an undulating muddy course of nine kilometres, which included no less than a total of nine hill climbs.

Steve Simpson led the Acorn contingent home, in 21st place. Martin Kirby was 24th, Jerry Barnes 28th, Ian Hagyard 48th, Mike Raynes 55th and Ged Hemblade 57th.

It was Hemblade's first serious race for nearly two years after a viral infection. Other finishers were John Duston 98th, Pete Hammond 105th, Steve Edison 111th, Jon Tranter 128th, and Gerry Orchard 131st.

In the 22-mile race at Kilburn Alan Reynolds timed 5hr 28min, John Mills 5-54 and Jenny Rowland also finished.

In the women's race at Hartlepool over about 5km Helen Barnes was 25th, Julie Bushell 30th, Joanne Simpson 32nd and Catherine Fleming 47th in a field of 73.
