The luckless Captain's Log, who just failed to get the better of Himself at Newcastle last Sunday, turns out at Ascot tomorrow with excellent prospects of gaining swift and rich compensation.
Michael Bell's three-year-old bids for the £12,000 49's Handicap, one of the three races being shown live on BBC1.
It is to be hoped that Captain's Log is not given quite so much to do tomorrow as he was at Newcastle.
Held up in last place he was left with a lot of running to do in the home straight and, despite staying on strongly, was beaten a head by Himself.
On his previous start, in a well-contested handicap at Newamrket, Captain's Log failed to get a clear run and finished sixth of the 16 runners.
A winner at Newcastle this season, Captain's Log has the ability to land a decent handicap and I fancy that opportunity will come for him tomorrow.
Premier Generation, trained by David Arbuthnot and the mount of Kieren Fallon, who rode four winners at Newcastle yesterday, looks the main danger.
Nigel Tinkler, whose stable-star Sugarfoot is set to contest Saturday's Tote International Handicap, bids to get nicely into Ascot's winning groove tomorrow by landing the Rennie Deflatine Handicap with High Carry.
This speedy filly is gradually running into form and at Goodwood last week finished a close-up fourth to Eastern Lyric despite being forced to race down the unfavoured centre of the course.
It is significant that Pat Eddery will ride High Carry tomorrow.
The Bonusprint Fillies' Conditions Stakes does not look a race punters will want to get too heavily involved in, but Supercal, another Eddery mount, has the ability to win if she puts her best foot forward.
Unsuited by a muddling pace at Doncaster last time, Supercal had previously finished an excellent sixth of 13 to Lover's Knot, beaten less than five lengths in the Group 2 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket.
A reproduction of that level of form from Supercal would be good enough to see her prevail here.
Moon Colony is in good form and is napped to complete a hat-trick of wins by landing the last race, the Cranbourne Chase.
Sussex trainer Lady Herries will be bidding to supplement her victory with Mowelga in the feature race at Pontefract yesterday.
At Haydock's evening meeting, Contentment has good prospects of gaining a deserved win in the Sunwin Handicap.
Gay Kelleway's four-year-old returned from a three and a half months' absence to finish a neck second to Vanborough Lad at Windsor last time out, doing all his best work in the final furlong after a tardy start.
The Wignall Poultry Handicap, a real teaser of a race for punters, offers Gablesea a fighting chance of supplementing his recent win at Chepstow.
The four-year-old did well to win that day, by a short head from Samara Song, having been short of room entering the final furlong. He can follow up over this extra furlong with Dale Gibson again taking the mount.
