Mrs Elliott, wife of the Bishop of Gloucester and her daughter, Miss Rosalind Elliott had gone for a drive at Gloucester last evening when they were run over by a pony trap. Mrs and Miss Elliott had a narrow escape and were seriously shaken. This made the third accident to their carriage within a comparatively short period.

Communism's challenge to Christianity was discussed at the resumed annual conference of Modern Churchmen here today. On the growth of Communism in Africa and the East, Dr A C Bouquet, lecturer at Cambridge University said: "What does it profit a West African if he enters the Christian fold only to make his exit from it into Marxism".

There was a record entry for the York eliminating round of the Lorry Driver of the Year competition, held yesterday in the grounds of Joseph Terry and Sons Ltd, Bishopthorpe Road, York. A total of 112 drivers, some from places as far away as Sheffield and Middlesbrough, worked their way through a number of manoeuvres to test driving skills.
