Yorkshire Cricket by David Warner
Yorkshire openers David Byas and Michael Vaughan were out in quick succession after putting on 39 in the championship match against Worcestershire at New Road which started today.
Although paceman Gavin Hamilton is still in pain with his broken little toe, he reported himself fit to play.
With off-spinner James Middlebrook retaining his place, the 12th man role went to Matthew Hoggard.
Yorkshire were boosted by the return of Darren Gough, whose aim is to work himself into peak form for England's Test showdown with South Africa at Headingley starting next Thursday.
Vaughan went into the game requiring a further 79 runs to become the first Yorkshire batsman to complete 1,000 first class runs this season.
After Yorkshire had won the toss and elected to bat first Phil Newport opened the bowling from the New Road end and Byas hit his first ball firmly through the covers for four.
Vaughan played out a maiden from Bobby Chapman before Byas worked Newport through mid-wicket for three, the ball stopping just short of the boundary.
Vaughan was off the mark with a single in the same over and added to it with a cover driven off Chapman which raced over the grass to crash into the boundary boards.
He was more fortunate, however, when a thick edge against Chapman bounced just in front of Vikram Solanki at third slip and the ball went through for four.
Vaughan found the boundary again by slicing Newport over the top of the slips. He got another four with an edge just to the right of Solanki at third slip.
Stuart Lampitt took over from Chapman, six overs for 15 runs, and Byas departed to his second ball which he nicked to Graeme Hick who held a regulation slip catch.
Matthew Wood square drove his first ball for four but then astute captaincy by Tom Moody brought about the downfall of Vaughan to leave Yorkshire struggling on 43 for two. Chapman switched ends to replace Newport and his first ball nipped back to trap Vaughan lbw for 23.
