Scores of York's roads and pavements are to get a new look.
The City of York Council says it intends to use a process known as "footpath dressing" to resurface 72 of York's worn-out pavements with bitumen.
Project manager Fred Isles says the "cost effective" new black tar surfaces will give paths an extra life span of up to seven years and will put an end to "patchwork" paths which have been dug up and refilled using different coloured tars by workmen.
"It needed to be done because these paths were worn out or wearing out and we don't want people falling on them. This method means we can extend their life for a very small amount of money."
About 3,500 homes are likely to be affected by the project which is expected to take six weeks.
Residents have been leafleted by City of York Council to warn them of possible disruption.
Completion of each path is expected to take less than a day and the tar surfaces themselves will take an hour to dry.
Twelve streets are also to have new bitumen surfaces covered with small stones. Work will begin on Monday, August 3, and is expected to take a week to complete.
The City of York footpath surface treatment programme is given here on a ward by ward basis.-
