Among Men, who enjoyed a confidence-boosting win in a minor race at Yarmouth earlier this month, steps back into the first division at Goodwood tomorrow and can capture the major honours.
This handsome colt, trained at Newmarket by Sir Michael Stoute, contests the intriguing £155,000 Sussex Stakes and, with Michael Kinane in the saddle, he promises to take all the beating.
Among Men started the season with a below-par effort in the Lockinge Stakes, but performed much more like his old self in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot. Although no match for easy winner Intikhab, the four-year-old emerged best of the rest in second place, and finished in front of three of his rivals tomorrow, Poteen, Almushtarak and Centre Stalls.
Among Men has since contested a four-runner race at Yarmouth, where he started at long odds-on and duly came up trumps without being asked a serious question.
Mark Johnston's 2,000 Guineas runner-up Lend A Hand, surprisingly beaten abroad since his magnificent Newmarket effort, will be one of the leading players tomorrow, but the North Yorkshire three-year-old faces a stiff task trying to contain Among Men, a previous winner over this course and distance.
In the £55,000 Tote Gold Trophy Handicap, punters should look no further than Zalal when trying to pinpoint the winner.
Luca Cumani's charge, unraced last year, has had just three outings this season and came good on the latest of them, overcoming trouble to justify favouritism at Bath in maiden company.
Zalal faces much stiffer opposition in this, his first handicap. But, stepping up in distance, this lightly-raced colt is open to marked improvement, and the booking of Pat Eddery looks significant. He is awarded the nap vote.
Aljabr, who created a big impression when winning easily on his debut at Sandown at the beginning of the month may prove capable of coping with a step up to Group 3 company in the Lanson Champagne Vintage Stakes, while the well-regarded Belasco, a beaten favourite on his debut, can make amends in the Doncaster Bloodstock Sales Maiden Stakes.
Scissor Ridge, a grand type of horse, who invariably pays his way, is fancied to lift the Charlton Handicap after his pillar-to-post victory at Folkestone a fortnight ago. Jimmy Quinn again has the mount.
At Doncaster's evening meeting Jimmy Too has good prospects of regaining the winning thread in the Ward's Thorne Best Bitter Conditions Stakes.
Bryan McMahon's sprinter gave notice of a return to form at Haydock on his latest start when finishing third, beaten just over a length by Superior Premium in a six furlongs conditions race. Over the same distance here, he could find opportunity knocking.
Minetta, winner of her last two races, is a filly on a high.
Michael Bell's three-year-old who showed plenty of grit and determination to inch out Sovereign's Court at Bath last time, has hat-trick claims in the Master Cutler Fillies' Handicap. Smart apprentice, Richard Mullen has the mount, claiming a valuable 5lb allowance.
