Professor Robin Butlin, principal of the University College of Ripon & York St John, is leaving his post.
Prof Butlin will be returning to academic research in the University of Leeds, three years after taking up the position of principal at the split-site university college.
Prof Butlin, who succeeded Professor Gordon McGregor, who retired after 15 years at St John's, was formerly professor of geography at Loughborough University.
A graduate of Liverpool University, he previously held posts at universities in London, Dublin and the USA, and has also been a visiting professor at Cambridge University.
Prof Butlin has an international reputation in his research field on historical geography and has produced an extensive range of influential publications.
A statement from the University College of Ripon & York St John said, "subject to final agreement", Prof Butlin will be leaving his post on August,31.
A new principal will be appointed at a later date.
