A grant of thousands of pounds has made a splash with local children at a nursery soon to get extra carers.

The youngsters of St Dymphna's Nursery, in Holgate, have been given the cash from the Lloyds TSB Foundation, one of the largest grant-giving organisations in the country.

And they have been told the cash will pay for nursery nurses for this summer's play scheme.

The nursery, which cares for children with learning difficulties, was given more than £3,100 by the organisation.

During the summer it widens to provide a play scheme for other members of the family.

Nursery manager Beverley Southern said: "This grant means we can provide a full-time play scheme right through the summer that gives all members of the family a bit of a holiday.

"By integrating disabled and able children we hope they develop an understanding of each others needs."

The Lloyds TSB Foundation supports charities that enable people, especially the disabled, to play a fuller role in society.

Richard Hannam, business banking manager at Lloyds Bank in York said: "This is the only nursery in the area that provides pre-school activities for special needs children and it has a wonderful atmosphere.

"It provides an opportunity for families with children with learning difficulties to get a break."
