A four-year-old York girl has been admitted to hospital suffering from bacterial meningitis. The girl, a pupil in the nursery unit of Knavesmire Primary School, was admitted to York District Hospital on Monday.
Dr Phil Kirby, consultant in public health medicine for North Yorkshire Health Authority, said the strain of bacterial meningitis, meningococcal meningitis, was potentially extremely serious, but stressed it was an isolated case. After consultation with the nursery department, Dr Kirby said information had been sent to other parents at the nursery informing them of the situation.
Leaflets listing symptoms and helpline numbers were also included.
Clive Hyland, head teacher of Knavesmire Primary School, said: "Obviously, our concerns are for the health of the little girl concerned.
But, having spoken to her parents, I understand she is responding well to treatment."
