David Warner on Yorkshire Cricket
Yorkshire opener Michael Vaughan, who had made 409 runs in his five previous championship innings, was out just as he looked set for another big score against Nottinghamshire at Scarborough today.
When he had reached 41 he was bowled by Kevin Evans at the start of a new spell and Yorkshire were 77 for 2.
Vaughan and nightwatchman Paul Hutchison started out on the second day with Yorkshire 43 for one in reply to Nottinghamshire's moderate first innings score of 234 and each batsman began carefully with a maiden against Paul Franks and Evans respectively.
Hutchison, who batted through the remainder of the innings from the No 3 spot when nightwatchman against Gloucestershire earlier in the season, opened his account with a single while Vaughan, 19 at the start, found the boundary with a sweetly struck drive through extra cover off Evans.
The 50 came up in the 21st over and after spotting Franks's slower ball and playing it for two, Vaughan pulled the medium-pacer for another four.
Notts turned to the spin of Zimbabwean Paul Strang at 64 for one in 27 overs but Vaughan on drove his first ball for four and sent his next racing through extra cover to rattle the fencing.
Vaughan whipped Strang off his legs for two to enter the 40s and he was once again looking the sort of quality batsman that England cannot ignore for ever.
Yorkshire paid a heavy price yesterday for dropping Tim Robinson when he was only eight, his edge to McGrath being put down.
Robinson went on to make 114 off 222 balls with 15 fours and with Usman Afzaal put on 161 for the third wicket.
