David Warner on Yorkshire Cricket
Darren Gough grabbed a wicket with the third ball of the match after Yorkshire had won the toss and put Nottinghamshire in to bat on a green pitch at North Marine Road today.
Yorkshire remained very much in charge in between the showers and Chris Silverwood also struck an early blow, but Nottinghamshire had recovered to 49 for two in 17 overs when a burst of rain caused the second interruption of the morning.
With Gough playing his first championship match since mid-May, Yorkshire were a full-strength, apart from the continued absence of Craig White who is still suffering from back problems.
Nottinghamshire included Bradford-born fast bowler Alex Wharf who left his native county during last season. Wharf made his Yorkshire debut at Scarborough in 1994 when he claimed Brian Lara as his maiden first class victim in the match against Warwickshire.
A big crowd braved uncertain weather and saw a dramatic start with Mathew Dowman taking two runs off each of the first two balls from Gough before playing down the wrong line at the next and being trapped lbw.
Former Lancashire batsman Jason Gallian was joined by Usman Afzaal but Silverwood was into only his second over of the day when a sharp shower caused a few minutes' delay.
Afzaal played a good forcing shot through point to gain a boundary off Gough on the resumption but Gallian has still not scored from 14 deliveries when he jabbed down on Silverwood and chopped the ball into his stumps, making Nottinghamshire ten for two.
Veteran Tim Robinson was given a hostile reception when he came in to bat and his first ball from Silverwood lifted unpleasantly outside off-stump on its way to wicketkeeper Richard Blakey.
Afzaal edged Gough for four and Robinson struck Silverwood to the square leg boundary but he led a charmed life in a splendid over from Gough. In trying to withdraw the bat, Robinson edged a straight forward catch to Anthony McGrath who put down a simple catch at first slip.
Harrogate CC are waiting for the outcome of an appeal to the organisers of the Abbot Ale Cup after their sixth round opponents were booted out of the competition at the weekend.
Atherton were due to visit St George's Road for an inter-zonal clash on Sunday but, according to Harrogate, chose to play a Bolton Association Cup match instead. The Competitions Office at Lord's promptly threw Atherton out of the Abbot Ale Cup, but they have appealed against the decision.
