York City have slotted in a final pre-season friendly to christen a £7 million arena.

The Minstermen have agreed to an invitation from Scottish First Division club Airdrie to open their new Excelsior Stadium on Saturday, August 1 - a week before the start of the Nationwide League campaign at Preston.

The Diamonds' new home is an all-seater ground with a capacity of 10, 200.

Airdrie, who number former City striker Steve Cooper in their ranks, will first be journeying south of the border to compete in this weekend's four-club tournament at Bootham Crescent also involving North Yorkshire rivals Scarborough and Premiership fallers Barnsley.

The Tykes, who graced the top-flight in vain last season, open the tournament on Saturday against Scarborough, kick-off 12.45pm. That will be followed by City tackling Airdrie (3pm).

The losers of both games will open the Sunday programme, also at 12.45pm, followed by the winners kicking off at 3pm. Admission to each day is £5 for adults, or £2 for children, with the one price covering both that day's games.
