Holland and Spain were crowned champions of the Evening Press World Cup for youngsters at the University of York.

Holland, represented by Heworth, completed their fixtures with a 6-2 win over Yugoslavia (Selby Juniors 'A') to finish top of Pool 'A'.

Both sides went into the game with 100% winning records, but the Dutch came out on top to book a place in the final against the winners of Pool A, Brazil.

Brazil represented by Hamilton Panthers) also completed their Pool games by winning all five of their matches.

But in a rip-roaring final they were pipped 3-2 by Holland.

The competition, which finished yesterday, was jointly sponsored by the Evening Press, Nestl and the University of York. It involved 24 junior teams representing countries in France 98.

In the younger group, victory went to Spain (Wiggington Grasshoppers), who beat Belgium (Selby Juniors 'B') 4-0.

Pool D winners Spain completed their programme with a 9-1 victory over Paraguay to go through to the final against Pool C victors Belgium, who signed off the Pool games with a 3-0 win over England (Heworth AFC).

The Fair Play award went to USA in Pool C and D, while south Africa took the same award for Pools A and B.

The competition is being hailed a storming success by the organisers, the University of York, who waived the entrance fee at the start of the tournament.

All matches were being played on the university's pitches.

Referees for matches this weekend were Ben Naughton, Dave Kershaw and Steve Holman.

After the five Pool matches, the winners of Pool A met the winners of Pool B with the Pool A teams in descending order playing their equivalent in Pool B.
